How Does This Work?

Picture
- Beginning on September 1, Mrs. Raines will lead a video art lesson on Zoom. You can join in real time, or watch the video later, whatever fits your schedule!
- Before each lesson, Mrs. Raines will post which lesson we'll be doing together, so you can have your materials ready.
- During the lesson, if you want to ask questions or ask for help, you can "raise your hand" in the Zoom meeting.
- Work at your own pace. Take as long as you would like to complete your project. You can work on it all at once, or come back to it if you need a break. You can even do it a couple of times, if you love it!
- After the lesson, you can post a picture of your finished masterpiece in our class gallery. You can also see what other students created, just like in regular classes! Seeing everyone's unique response to the project is half the fun!

What Do I Need to Do to Be Ready for Class?

- Look at this week's lesson, and make sure you have all the needed materials.
- Gather any extra materials needed for setup (sometimes you'll need a water cup, or a recycled palette for your paints)
- Cover your work space with a tablecloth or newspaper to protect it from messes!
- Wear "messy clothes" or an apron over your usual clothes, to protect yourself from messes!

What "Extra Materials" Might I Need for Class?

- A Sketchbook or blank paper for practice sketches, lists, and notes- white copy paper, blank index cards, or a "real sketchbook" are all useful. My favorite sketchbook is this one (available on Amazon or Blick art supplies online, as well as Walmart and Michael's.) The paper is so thick, you can even paint on the pages if you want to, and it won't rip or shred!
- Something to cover your work space- Newspapers or junk mail are great, or the Dollar Store sells table cloths that are easy to reuse. Since I work at my desk or dining room table, I always cover them up!
- Something to cover yourself- "Messy" play clothes that you don't mind getting wrecked, or a paint shirt or apron are best! Even I follow this rule, because I get messy when creating, too!
- Recycled Paint Palettes- Something to put your paint on/ mix colors on is a big help. I save cereal and cracker boxes for this, but you could also use a paper or styrofoam plate. You can reuse these from lesson to lesson, or trash/ recycle when you're done.
- Plastic cups- I save yogurt and cheese containers, and use them to hold water when I'm painting. I especially like wide, flat containers like cottage cheese and cool whip, because they're almost impossible to tip over!

Troubleshooting Zoom!

Before you begin a live camp, tinker around with Zoom a little bit and make sure you know how to do each of these things on your device of choice:
- Start/ Stop Video
- Mute/ Unmute Microphone
- Give thumbs up reaction
- Go to Gallery View
- Pin a video (might not need this, but handy to know just in case!)

How to Wash Your Brushes

I know what you're thinking- "Mrs. Raines, I KNOW how to wash a brush." Let's just make sure, though, because you don't want to wreck your new brushes on the first outing! Normally in class, I would demonstrate how to do this and then make sure you did it correctly, but since you're at home, you'll have to be REALLY SURE you did it right! Watch this video to learn the best way to wash your brushes.
